Cell phones in schools

As cellular technology develops, some social debates erupt. It’s been in the news for some time now and parents and children are protesting against it: the ban on cellular phones in schools. How should the matter of cell phones in schools be handled?

Cellular phones in schools are a problem. Students are using them a lot and most of them couldn’t imagine living without a cellular phone. This brings the following issues:

The Bad

  1. Cell phones are a distraction – The students use short message service (SMS) and not everyone remember to turn off their phone during class.
  2. Cheating – Students can share information during exams. They can also store any information they want on their cellular phone.
  3. Invasion of privacy – Camera phones are very popular, and they are sometimes used in an inappropriate way in schools, for example in bathrooms.
  4. Harassment – Text messaging is used as a form of harrasment or bullying.
  5. Stealing – Mobile phones are usually worth over $100 and not every family can afford to buy one for their children. These two factors often lead to cell phone theft.

One could argue that cheating has always been and will always be and that and bullying existed before cell phones came to schools. Cell phones only emphasize existing issues.

The Good

  1. Feeling of security – Knowing that your children are reachable anytime is quite reassuring for a parent, especially after events such as the Columbine shooting and the September 11th tragedy.
  2. It brings families together – Families don’t seem to have much time to spend together anymore. With overtime and after-school activities, having the ability to communicate with any one of your family member helps bringing families together.
  3. Cellphones are convenient – Everybody is more busy nowadays. Students are involved in activities after school, and practices and meeting time tend to vary a lot. It is very convenient for a student who does not have access to public transportation to call their parents for a ride when they need one.

Again, one could say that parents should trust the school’s representatives with their children’s safety and that families should try to spend more time together instead of having to talk over electromagnetic waves. Yes, you can still live on without a cell phone.

Most students use their phone responsibly. Instead of enforcing a ban, teach them how to use their mobile phone in society. That way, when they get out of school, they will be more aware of the people around them when they make or receive phone calls. I bet they will behave better than 75% of the adults with cell phones out there.

New technologies are a part of our lives, and responsible use should be learned in school.

I attend a secodary school for law and i think we need to keep our cell pohne. Because when we go home something could happen. Student dont even cheat on a test like that it would be to noticeble in class and the only information we store is picture we take with our freinds at lunch. So its no fair ,we student need to contact our parents, Thats what they are mostly for. This whole banning thing is bad!

Natahsa November 2, 2006 at 2:10 pm

Yes but if there is a national emergency and everyone got o their cell phones then the phone lines would over crowd and then knowone would be able to use any phone in the area, which would be very bad.

Dustin November 30, 2006 at 3:13 pm

I think that cellphones should not be banned because that is a really stupid law. I know that everyone that has a cellphone brings it to school, and we haven’t had a problem yet so what’s the point of the banning.

bob January 1, 2007 at 12:00 pm

cell phones should be banned in scool because cell phones have calculaters so kids can cheat……………………………………………………..?????????

Lauren February 7, 2007 at 3:40 pm

Everyday, more and more people become dependent on electonics. School is not a place to encourage the addiction.

To "bob" April 11, 2007 at 5:11 pm

Bob, you might be the dumbest person I have ever read a message from. If I wanted to use a caculator on a test, I could 1) hide a caculator under the desk like a phone. 2) Use a calculator- watch. 3) Pass notes.

joellyn April 26, 2007 at 12:44 pm

i think that cell phones should be allowed cause my be that your mom of somthing might have died and th parents don’t know whats the shool phoned number is so they could call you

wekota washakie April 26, 2007 at 12:44 pm

I think we should have cel phone because we need them to keep in contact with my famiy or friends why because when you leave your phone at home and you go somewhere’s i feel lonely cause i can’t keep contact wit my mom or dad so we should have cell phones

wekota washakie April 26, 2007 at 3:49 pm

i thin we should have cell phones in class and in school because our saftey i know some other school get to have them but they leave them in there lockers and we can check in between classes but we have to hurry come on teachers get to have cell phones and they sometimes distubed the class. And i always bring my cell phone with every school day for my safty because i think of other’s before of me.So we should have cell phones because at our school we have school phones but i never use them because there always bussy we only have 12 lines but our school is to big for that.SO WE SHOULD HAVE CELL PHONES AT SCHOOL AND IN CLASS ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS PUT THEM TO NO SOUND OR VIBARTE.

addie April 26, 2007 at 8:56 pm

i believe we should not have cell phones at school even if it seems like you are the only one who doesn’t have at cell phone in junior high)It is a major distraction during class and now th aversge age of a child who has a cell phone is eight years old! that is not right!

Richard Guy May 2, 2007 at 4:27 pm

i disagree i think cell phones should not be banned from school i lovesa u antara

samantha May 2, 2007 at 7:15 pm

I think that cell phones shouldnt be banned. My main concern is that theyre a way to communicate in case of and emergency. Many people have gone trough a moment where their cell phone was needed because of something dangerous going on. Not only does it help when in need but it also assures the people you care for are safe while in a tragedy. I know for a fact that at times cell phones can be disturbing while in class but its our fault as parents…we should teach our children when it is appropriate to use it and how. Not only does the fault go to parents but to teens as well…they should be aware that cell phones are for important things only! Therefore cell phones shouldnt be completly banned but they should be more controlled and not everyone should take the blame for some people who take advantage of the sittuation.

callie n kelly May 8, 2007 at 2:14 pm

heyy we should be able to use our cells when ever we want…they shouldnt be banned !

Ariel March 12, 2008 at 6:46 pm

Our school seems a lot worse than yours. last month 11 grader was caught using one during a test, and it was totally confiscated, and he had to have his parents come and PAY to get it back! then school officials got some kind of warrent to go through our stuff. and took everyone’s cell phones out of their lockers and kept them until our parents could come and get them, luckily a lot of kids had their cell phones on them. But the people who had theirs taken away whos parents actually work for living, still can’t get their phones.

baby nena March 13, 2008 at 9:29 am

omg i think cell phones shouldnt be bannded 4rm school because we need 2 had some free time 2 be txing our friend. i lov joseph

blabla232 March 23, 2008 at 4:46 am

well….suppose to debate bout this topic….kinda useful so thanx to whoever did this and commented….basically, I do think cell phones should not be banned because of emergency and stuff… They are always stolen because students tend to hide it from teachers by putting inside the desk or table. This enables the other students to steal it but if it is allowed, students are able to put it inside their pockets at all time and chances of it getting stolen is minimal.

katie M March 26, 2008 at 1:26 pm

some of you guys are making stupid comments.
“we should have cellphones in school cause they are sweet”
are you serious? I mean if your going to argue your point, know what your talking about, and give good reasons.Im 15 years old and I even know that!

Jasmin E. April 1, 2008 at 9:10 am

cell phones shuld be aloud at school ok? i dont know why these freaking adults just wont let us have them. if u get caught with it then your name can just go down on a list to be banned from bringing them to school. that culd work rite!?

It’s so stupid reading some of your comments that have the words “brb, lol, and words with out the “G” at the end of runnin. Grow up and learn english. Some students can use their phone responcibile. As for the stupid people who disturb class with ringtones being on or texting because they want to know whats up in the next class over. Cell Phones should be allowed in school but should not be on. I also think that some punishment for having a cell phone out is over the top. Take the cell phone away for the class and give the kid a detention. There is no need to take it away for a semester. stupid rules are just going to make parents and students have a up roar.
